Home Console Emulators
ePSXe
Editor's Choice Sony Playstation Emulator

For the longest time, the only thing that would come to mind when "Playstation Emulation" was mentioned would be "Bleem!", the first true success of Playstation Emulation. Now, all that's left of that once great emulator are a few crippled demos on the emulation sites and a few scratched discs on eBay. Well, those times are gone, and at last, the PSX emulation community has a new champion, ePSXe.
Gens
Editor's Choice Sega Genesis / 32X / CD Emulator

Gens is the Open-Source Sega Genesis , Sega CD and 32X emulator that set the bar for all other emulators to achieve. Gens is parallel to none in all three consoles it emulates and was even used by Sega of America in a project to revive a couple of the Genesis classics.
Magic Engine
Editor's Choice Trubo Grafx 16 Emulator

Magic Engine is known to many Turbo Grafx and Turbo Duo fans as the only emulator, and for good reason. Magic Engine may not be able to run 50 instances of itself simultaneously, automatically patch ROMs of 200 different formats or provide 30 different hardware accelerated rendering modes but it can do one thing well, and that's emulate it's target platform and provide all of the necessary features to make it comfortable. Magic Engine stands in a class alone in it's respective category.
RockNES X
Editor's Choice NES and Famicom Disk System Emulator

RockNES X is an NES and Famicom Disk System (FDS for short) emulator for Windows based on Fx3's DOS-based emulator, RockNES. This emulator is one of the most well-rounded emulators we've encountered for the NES. Although the Windows port of Rock NES has been discontinued it leaves behind a legacy of great emulation and the ability to reunite us with the classics of yesterday.
ZSNES
Editor's Choice Super Nintendo Emulator

Even from it's beginings as an early DOS-based emulator ZSNES showed great promise and was the first to emulate many of the Super Nintendo's more obscure technologies. Today ZSNES is recognized as the best SNES emulator available with three completely current builds available for Windows, Linux, and of course, DOS.

Portable Console Emulators
FreezeSMS
Editor's Choice Sega Master System and Game Gear Emulator

For a long time, the Sega Master System and Game Gear have been neglected platforms in the emulation world. The last great SMS / Game Gear emulator was the formerly DOS-based MEKA; however, with the advent of more advanced Operating Systems and graphics cards, the once great emulator, MEKA, has become little more than a fond memory to the emulation community. For several years, many new SMS and Game Gear emulators have come to the emulation scene, most of were mediocre at best, but finally, there is a light at the end of the tunnel; FreezeSMS. FreezeSMS is the first truly great SMS and Game Gear emulator of the 21st century, one which will be sure to live on for many years.
VisualBoy Advance
Editor's Choice Gameboy and Gameboy Advance Emulator

From the author of the excellent GameBoy emulator, VisualBoy, comes a new and ground-breaking Gameboy Advance Emulator, VisualBoy Advance. Also included in this emulator is the classic GameBoy Emulator, VisualBoy which development on the standalone version has ceased. This emulator was the hands-down editor's choice award winner for both the GameBoy and GameBoy Advance categories, continue reading to find out why.
