FreezeSMS is without a doubt the best modern Game
Gear / SMS emulator. FreezeSMS has a very high compatibility
rate along with a laundry list of features too long
to mention in such a small paragraph. For more information,
please see the Editor’s Choice Review.

The
table below contains editor's choice and recommended emulators.
These are emulators that particularly stand out on their respective
platforms or in many cases can emulate their target platform
with a 90% accuracy rate or higher.
Dega

v1.12
for Windows
4 / 14 / 2004 |
Dega is a fairly
recent addition to the Game Gear / SMS family of
emulators and quite a good one at that. Compatibility
is quite good and Dega also includes most common
features such as gamepad and save state support.
Dega also allows the use of two other graphical
overlays to allow for higher quality and smoother
video. Unlike a good bit of SMS / Game Gear emulators,
Dega also has a full screen mode paired with a stretch
to fit full-screen mode. Overall Rating
7.5 out of 10 |
Wakalabis

|
v.1.01
for Windows
7 / 29 / 2003 |
Wakalabis is
a new Game Gear / SMS emulator for Windows. The
main goal of the Wakalabis team is to focus more
on compatibility and accuracy instead of on performance
and speed. Despite this, Wakalabis still shows very
satisfactory speed and performance as well as compatibility
and accuracy. This is another emulator to watch;
if the first release is any indication, this is
going to shape up to be a great emulator!
Overall Rating 6.5 out of 10 |

The
emulators below are considered works-in-progress. Due to their
development stage many of these emulators may exhibit stability
issues and may have little or no compatibility with commercial
titles. Also due to their development stage we do not feel
it's fair to rate these emulators as we do the others, so all
emulators in this category are un-rated.
CHASMS
Homepage |
v0.30
for Windows
6 / 3 / 2000 |
Despite it’s
DOS-like appearance, CHASMS is in fact a full-fledged
Windows emulator requiring Direct X 3.0 or above.
CHASMS has most of the basic features you would
expect from an entry-level emulator such as Save
State support and cheat support. Compatibility
is fair, but this is a fairly old project which
hasn’t been updated in over three years and
the quality graphical rendering reflects this. |
MEKA

v0.71
for Windows
6 / 25 / 2005
v0.70 for
DOS
4 / 3 / 2005
v0.71 Source Code
6 / 25 / 2005 |
This is the Windows
port of the fabled DOS SMS / Game Gear emulator,
MEKA. Unfortunately MEKA-W is still in the development
stages and as such it exhibits many quarks that
will hopefully be ironed out in the near future.
As of v0.70, MEKA is now an open source project.
For license information, see the sources.txt file
located in the source code package. |
NeoSMS
No Homepage |
v0.3
Build 19 for Windows
5 / 2 / 2000 |
NeoSMS is quite
a basic emulator, lacking a full-screen mode, save
state system, hardware acceleration, and controller
calibration. In addition to a lack of features,
NeoSMS also exhibits a lot of display problems
and has a strangely cluttered GUI, taking up three
windows. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like
this emulator will receive any updates anytime
soon. |
Past-O-Rama
Homepage |
v0.05
for Windows
3 / 21 / 2001 |
Past-O-Rama
is primarily a Sega SG1000 emulator but also handles
Sega Master System and Game Gear. Past-O-Rama has
a fairly good compatibility rate, but has a few
serious downfalls in the video department. |
