All
Nintendo 64 emulators in this section require plugins for video,
audio, and input. At this time, we do not have Nintendo 64
plugins available on our site. We're planning to add this in
the very near future, but for now, most releases on this page
include plugins and additional plugins can be downloaded on
other sites.
The
table below contains editor's choice and recommended emulators.
These are emulators that particularly stand out on their respective
platforms or in many cases can emulate their target platform
with a high accuracy rate.

v0.9.9 for Windows

v0.8.5 Source
12 / 17 / 2002 |
1964 is currently
the most compatible Nintendo 64 emulator in existence.
1964 runs many commercial games in their entirety
with only minimal or no glitches at all. The default
plugins that are included with this emulator are
slightly outdated so when using 1964, you may want
to obtain newer versions of a few of it’s
plugins. 1964 is currently only available for the
Windows platform, a slightly outdated source release
is also available.

v0.07b Source

Daedalus is a relatively
new open-source Nintendo 64 emulator. Daedalus

as well as a source code release are available
for this emulator.

Nintendo 64 emulator programmed by Hacktarux, with

and very streamlined GUI. Mupen 64 uses the standard

Nemu64

v0.8 for Windows
3 / 22 / 2003 |
Nemu64 is a great
Nintendo 64 emulator supporting many commercial
games. One of Nemu64’s strong points is the
fact that it’s plugins require very little
configuration and are all included with the release
of the emulator. Nemu64 also includes a great ROM
loader which can give a compatibility summary on
most titles. This release is only available in
binary form for Windows.

v1.6
for Windows (Installer)
4 / 1 / 2005
v1.4 Source
12 / 25 / 2001 |
Project64 is the
second best Nintendo 64 emulator next to 1964 in
terms of compatibility. Although documentation
is something that’s not touched on heavily,
it’s one of Project64’s major strong
points. Project64 includes a very extensive manual
covering virtually every facet of the emulator
as well as Nintendo 64 emulation itself. To run
the latest release of Project 64, you must first
install the version 1.5 download and then download
and run the SP1 installer, pointing it to your
original 1.5 installation directory. The source
code to Project 64 is also available, though outdated.

Project64k

v0.13
for Windows
8 / 1 / 2003 |
Project64k is
a netplay-enhanced version of Project64. This version
is based off of the older Project64 1.4 and as
such is lacking much of the compatibility that
was added in 1.5 and 1.5 SP1. Netplay in Project64k
is implemented through the popular Kaillera matching
service and client.

The
emulators below are considered works-in-progress. Due to their
development stage many of these emulators may exhibit stability
issues and may have little or no compatibility with commercial
titles. Also due to their development stage we do not feel
it's fair to rate these emulators as we do the others, so all
emulators in this category are un-rated.
Apollo
Homepage |
v0.03 for Windows
11 / 23 / 2001
v0.10 Source
1 / 12 / 2004 |
Apollo is a promising
work showing the ability to run several commercial
games. Unfortunately, for personal reasons the
development team on this emulator has disbanded
and development itself has essentially stopped.
A later version of this emulator was released in
source, but no pre-compiled version was available
and as such, the current binary release is significantly
behind the source release. |
True Reality 64

v5.5 for Windows
Date Unknown
v.5.666 WIP for Windows
12 / 14 / 2001 |
TrueReality 64 (TR64)
is a windows port of the True Reality project.
TR64 is capable of playing a handful of commercial
titles with few glitches but is otherwise a good
deal behind many of the other Nintendo 64 emulators
in terms of compatibility. Both version 5.5 and
5.666 are considered works-in-progress by the development
team and as such, may and do exhibit some stability
issues. It should also be noted that 5.666 is not
accompanied by any documentation or any plugins,
only the executable is included. |
UltraHLE 2064

v1.0.5a for Windows
6 / 30 / 2003 |
UltraHLE 2064 is
a new revival of the original UltraHLE emulator.
The development team’s goal is to raise compatibility
as high as they can and push the HLE method to
it’s fullest potential. Like UltraHLE, this
new release also requires a Voodoo-based video
card and as such, many users will need to use a
Glide Wrapper in order to use this emulator. |
UltraHLE
Homepage |
v1.0.0
for Windows
1 / 28 / 1999 |
UltraHLE is
the first Nintendo 64 that ever came into existence
and the one that reshaped the emulation scene as
a whole. After it’s leaked initial release,
it had already shown the ability to run several
commercial games and also received a large amount
of media coverage in the gamming community. UltraHLE
requires a Glide-compatible (3Dfx Voodoo-Based)
video card. As such, most users wishing to try
this emulator will need to use a Glide Wrapper,
which essentially emulates Glide support. UltraHLE’s
compatibility is much lower than that of more modern
emulators, but it is one emulator that will never
be forgotten for it’s great contribution
and is certainly worth a look for anyone looking
to see a piece of history. |
