FCE Ultra is one
of the best NES emulators out there in terms of
compatibility. It supports quite a few mappers and
also has support for Famicom Disk System games.
FCE Ultra also packs a pretty big list of features
including Game Genie emulation, Joysick support,
Save-Sate support, PAL emulation, a debugger and
net-play support via TCP/IP.
FCE Ultra has since been discontinued by the author,
and the last release of the v0.98.13 source code
was marked as an unofficial and untested release.

v0.61
Beta 1 for Windows
2 / 10 / 2001 |
NESten is an excellent
NES emulator featuring a wide selection of mappers,
save-state support, a debugger and other valuable
development output data, joystick support, support
for modular video plugins, a decent ROM manager
and finally, cheat support. The only thing this
emulator is lacking is a full-screen mode. This
is definitely an emulator worth looking at.

v1.28 Source

Nestopia is a NES
and Famicom Disk System emulator supporting save-states,
sound and video recording, Game Genie support, graphical
acceleration, several graphics filters and extensive
input device support. Nestopia is coded in C++ and
released as Open Source software under the GPL.
This is a very fast emulator and certainly one we
would recommend to anyone. The only site we have
available for Nestopia at the moment is their SourceForge
project page due to the demise of their former host.

NNNesterJ is another
great NES emulator featuring graphical acceleration,
graphical filters, save-states, netplay, support
for a wide variety of input devices, Game Genie
support and record-to-AVI support. Stability and
speed are exemplary in this emulator; it’s
definitely worth a download.

VirtuaNES is
another top-notch NES emulator with some graphical
acceleration, save-state support, a custom ROM manager,
WAV recording, netplay support, Famicom Disk System
support, joystick support and a host of other features.
VirtuaNES also has multi-lingual support through
the use of language plug-ins. Compatibility on VirtuaNES
is excellent, with support for over 130 mappers.

The
emulators below are considered works-in-progress. Due to their
development stage many of these emulators may exhibit stability
issues and may have little or no compatibility with commercial
titles. Also due to their development stage we do not feel
it's fair to rate these emulators as we do the others, so all
emulators in this category are un-rated.
Famtasia

v6
Beta for Windows
12 / 30 / 2000 |
Famtasia is a
NES and Famicom Disk System (FDS) emulator for Windows.
Famtasia has joystick support, save-state support,
multilingual support (German, English, French, Japanese,
and Portuguese) as well as previously mentioned,
Famicom Disk System support. Unfortunately Famtasia
has a few serious stability issues and development
seems to have stopped on this emulator. |

v4.00 Beta 1 for DOS

v3.10 for DOS
12 / 9 / 2003 |
RockNES is a
NES and Famicom Disk System (FDS) emulator for
Windows,
DOS, and MacOS. Until only recently, RockNES X
was the only DOS port of this emulator available,
but
now a complete port is available. The Windows port
of RockNES currently has full-screen multi-resolution
support, gamepad support, save state support, automatic
ROM patching, and Game Genie support.
The DOS version of RockNES was the emulator that
RockNES X was based upon. According to the author,
DOS versions of this emulator can be run under
Windows XP with the aid of VDMSound
(new window), an emulator which allows sound
and joystick support in DOS under Windows XP and
other flavors of NT. The latest DOS release of
RockNES is also in beta stages, and as such, we
have provided a download of the last stable release
as well.
