Currently, Red
Dragon is by far one of the most usable Virtual
Boy emulators available. It’s very strongly
based on the source code of Reality Boy and has
introduced a GUI as well as a much-needed Windows
port of the emulator. Currently, the Windows version
of Red Dragon can play about 20 titles fully with
little or no errors. For now, Red Dragon is the
best bet for anyone looking to re-live a few of
the Virtual Boy classics.

The
emulators below are considered works-in-progress. Due to their
development stage many of these emulators may exhibit stability
issues and may have little or no compatibility with commercial
titles. Also due to their development stage we do not feel
it's fair to rate these emulators as we do the others, so all
emulators in this category are un-rated.

Reality Boy is the
world’s first Virtual Boy emulator, written
by David Tucker. Reality Boy has fairly decent
compatibility
among the emulators in the Virtual Boy category
but is lacking in quite a few departments. The
project has recently been continued and now includes
a Windows version.
Currently, the only available DOS release is in
beta stages. There is also a beta for Windows,
but a stable release is available as well. |

v1.0
for Windows

Virtual-E is
another Virtual Boy emulator which uses a few bits
and pieces of the original Reality Boy source code
and was written in C++ by Alberto Covarrubias of
the Virtual-E project. Virtual-E sports a very unique
GUI reminiscent of the Virtual Boy itself. The emulator
also contains a first for any Virtual Boy emulator,
preliminary sound emulation. Currently, 6 games
out of the Virtual Boy library are playable, while
3 others are semi-playable and the rest usually
won’t make it to the title screen. In our
tests, we’ve also experienced a few serious
stability issues. It would also appear that Virtual-E
is another discontinued project. |
