Apollo is a promising work showing the ability to run several commercial games. Unfortunately, for personal reasons the development team on this emulator has disbanded and development itself has essentially stopped. A later version of this emulator was released in source, but no pre-compiled version was available and as such, the current binary release is significantly behind the source release.

TrueReality 64 (TR64) is a windows port of the True Reality project. TR64 is capable of playing a handful of commercial titles with few glitches but is otherwise a good deal behind many of the other Nintendo 64 emulators in terms of compatibility. Both version 5.5 and 5.666 are considered works-in-progress by the development team and as such, may and do exhibit some stability issues. It should also be noted that 5.666 is not accompanied by any documentation or any plugins, only the executable is included.

UltraHLE 2064 is a new revival of the original UltraHLE emulator. The development team’s goal is to raise compatibility as high as they can and push the HLE method to it’s fullest potential. Like UltraHLE, this new release also requires a Voodoo-based video card and as such, many users will need to use a Glide Wrapper in order to use this emulator.

UltraHLE is the first Nintendo 64 that ever came into existence and the one that reshaped the emulation scene as a whole. After it’s leaked initial release, it had already shown the ability to run several commercial games and also received a large amount of media coverage in the gamming community. UltraHLE requires a Glide-compatible (3Dfx Voodoo-Based) video card. As such, most users wishing to try this emulator will need to use a Glide Wrapper, which essentially emulates Glide support. UltraHLE’s compatibility is much lower than that of more modern emulators, but it is one emulator that will never be forgotten for it’s great contribution and is certainly worth a look for anyone looking to see a piece of history.
