Recommended Emulators

Recommended emulators provide good compatibility, performance and stability. Emulators in this category are suitable for gaming.

Dega
No Homepage
Dega is a fairly recent addition to the Game Gear / SMS family of emulators and quite a good one at that. Compatibility is quite good and Dega also includes most common features such as gamepad and save state support. Dega also allows the use of two other graphical overlays to allow for higher quality and smoother video. Unlike a good bit of SMS / Game Gear emulators, Dega also has a full screen mode paired with a stretch to fit full-screen mode.

v1.12 for Windows (4/14/2004)
MEKA
Visit Homepage
MEKA is primarily an advanced open-source SMS emulator. MEKA also supports the SG-1000, SC-3000, SF-7000, Sega Mark III, Game Gear, ColecoVision and Othello Multivision. MEKA has a wide assortment of developer tools and is available for Windows, DOS and Linux. MEKA features one of the highest compatibility rates among both the SMS and Game Gear categories.

Wakalabis
Visit Homepage
The main goal of the Wakalabis team is to focus more on compatibility and accuracy instead of on performance and speed. Despite this, Wakalabis still shows very satisfactory speed and performance as well as compatibility and accuracy.

v1.01 for Windows (7/29/2003)

Other Emulators

Emulators in this category are generally considered early in development or have not reached a level of compatibility, performance and stability that would be suitable for gaming. These emulators are considered works-in-progress.

CHASMS
No Homepage
Despite it’s DOS-like appearance, CHASMS is in fact a full-fledged Windows emulator requiring Direct X 3.0 or above. CHASMS has most of the basic features you would expect from an entry-level emulator such as Save State support and cheat support. Compatibility is fair.

v0.30 for Windows (6/3/2000)
FreezeSMS
Visit Homepage
FreezeSMS is a Sega Game Gear, Master System, SG-1000, ColecoVision and NES emulator for Windows. FreezeSMS has good Game Gear and SMS compatibility as well as a robust and full-featured user interface. Unfortunately, FreezeSMS exhibits several stability problems and development appears to have been discontinued.

v4.6 for Windows (7/3/2002)
NeoSMS
No Homepage
NeoSMS is a basic Game Gear / SMS emulator for Windows. NeoSMS is capable of playing several commercial titles and is currently lacking most features. Gamepad support is present, but cannot be configured. The last build of NeoSMS was from May of 2000 and it would appear the project has been abandoned.

v0.3 Build 19 for Windows (5/2/2000)
Past-O-Rama
Visit Homepage
Past-O-Rama is primarily a Sega SG1000 emulator but also handles Sega Master System and Game Gear. Past-O-Rama has a fairly good compatibility rate and has gamepad support. Due to it's age though, it is unstable on most modern operating systems.

v0.05 for Windows (3/21/2001)
